Fatality Crash

Institute, WV- On Sunday, June 5, 2023, around 4:15 p.m., Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to investigate a rollover crash at the 51 mile-marker on Interstate 64, eastbound at Institute. A female was ejected from the vehicle and died because of her injuries. The roadway was closed for nearly six hours as reconstruction investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators have been able to determine that two vehicles were involved in a road rage incident when one of those vehicles lost control and crashed. Deputies believe that one of the involved vehicles had gotten onto Interstate 64E at Nitro where the other vehicle, a blue Buick Rendezvous, was already traveling eastbound. The drivers of the two vehicles became involved in a road rage incident and witnesses told deputies the drivers were driving recklessly and erratically over the next few miles. Deputies believe that at some point near the 51 mile-marker, the driver of the Buick made an aggressive maneuver towards the other vehicle and lost control of his vehicle. The Buick crashed into the retaining wall and began to flip multiple times as the front passenger was eventually ejected. Neither the driver nor passenger was found to be wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred.

The female passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene and has been identified as 31-year-old, Amanda Getts of Missouri. Currently no charges have been filed against the drivers as this is still very early in the investigation. Deputies have interviewed multiple witnesses and analyzed the scene where the crash occurred; however, if anyone has any information or video surveillance that could be helpful to investigators, please contact the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
