At approximately 9:30 a.m. a crash occurred on Route 61 near Turnpike Ford, between Charleston and Marmet, WV.  Metro 911 received information indicating a maroon Pontiac G6 was going south on Route 61 and a gray Jeep Wrangler was going north on Route 61.  The two were involved in a head-on collision.

The impact forced the Jeep onto the retaining wall separating Route 61 from I-64/WV Turnpike.  The driver of the Jeep was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center, as was the passenger of the Pontiac.  The driver of the Pontiac was killed in the crash.

Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene the Pontiac crossed the center lane prior to the impact, causing the crash.  The driver was not wearing a seat belt.  The deceased is being transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy may be performed.

Names are being withheld while family members are notified of the event.

The incident is being investigated by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.
