On June 2, 2015 just after 5:00 p.m. Deputy Boner of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office was on Hampshire Drive in Jefferson, WV on an unrelated incident. He was approached by some residents about an injured dog. Deputy Boner found the dog’s owners who told him someone tried to cut off both their dog’s front legs. The dog, Maliki, saw the dog’s front legs were severed above the knees and he was cut on his face.
Deputy Boner immediately called the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association to seek advice. He then took the dog in his cruiser to the Cross Lanes Veterinary Hospital on Old Goff Mountain Road. Once there the dog was examined by veterinarians who began to treatment. His injuries were extensive and he had lost a lot of blood. Three veterinarians were consulted about the case. There were surgical and prosthetic options considered, but the suffering was believed to be greater than what he could endure. All recommended he be euthanized. The dog was then put to sleep.
Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office have been investigating throughout the day.
There has been an outpouring of concern from the community and from people around the country. The offers of assistance are appreciated. Additional information will likely be released later in the day.
