On January 8, 2015, just before 1:00 a.m., Deputy J. L. Miller of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a yellow Jeep Wrangler that was weaving and traveling left of the center line on Edens Fork Road in the Sissonville area of Kanawha County.  The vehicle fled onto I-77 South and a pursuit began.

Deputy Miller announced the pursuit and law enforcement officers assisted by posting at exits along the route and following the fleeing Jeep.  The Jeep exited I-64 in South Charleston onto Kanawha Turnpike, then stopped on the side of the road a short distance from Jefferson Road.

The driver refused to follow commands to exit the vehicle.  Deputy Miller approached the car and recognized the driver as Elvis John.  Deputy Miller knew Mr. John from Deputy Miller’s time working at the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office’s Day Report Division.  Mr. John was removed from the vehicle and handcuffed, then taken to South Central Regional Jail to await arraignment this morning.

Mr. John’s operator’s license was revoked for driving under the influence, and he has prior convictions for driving while revoked.  A small amount of marijuana was found in his pocket during the arrest.  He was charged with driving while revoked for DUI, fleeing in a vehicle, and simple possession of marijuana.  As is always the case in criminal matters, the charges against Mr. John are merely accusations.  He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
