This morning (April 18, 2016) at approximately 9:20 a.m. a 911 call was placed reporting the theft of a side-by-side ATV from Ocean Drive, along Dutch Ridge Road. Deputy J. Burdette was assigned the call, and was on his way to that location to investigate when a crash was reported at 9:41 a.m. on Route 114 near the Big Chimney Bridge.
Multiple 911 calls were then made. Some indicated gun shots were fired at the same time as a crash occurred. As Deputy Burdette arrived on scene at the crash he detained one person, an adult male. Others involved in the incident had fled the scene in vehicles. That male said he saw the stolen ATV which belonged to his relative and tried to stop it. The stolen ATV was the same one Deputy Burdette was summoned to report and investigate. Further details about that detained male’s statement are not being released at this time.
Another adult male was shot and taken to Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Division for treatment. He was transported by another personal vehicle that arrived at the crash scene soon after the crash and shooting occurred. That vehicle was located elsewhere after transporting the adult male to the hospital. The occupants of the vehicle were detained by Charleston Police Officers on Greenbrier Street near Deitrick Boulevard.
The detained adult male has been released from custody. The adult male who was shot remains in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. No arrests have been made at this time.
Detectives with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office have been investigating throughout the day. That investigation continues. More information will likely be released on April 19, 2016. The Office of the Prosecutor of Kanawha County is participating in the investigation and will make decisions about criminal charges in the matter.
