On Saturday morning, just after 3:00 a.m., May 28, 2016, Deputy D. D. Meadows of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office saw a green Cadillac on Quarrier Street in downtown Charleston swerving, weaving, and otherwise driving erratically. He attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle near Court Street and the car came to a stop near the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse.
Deputy Meadows walked to the driver’s window and immediately smelled the odor of alcoholic beverages and marijuana. He also saw a small baggie with a white powdery substance on the driver’s lap. He instructed the driver to exit the vehicle, and the driver refused.
Deputy Meadows then removed from the vehicle the driver, 39 year old Isaiah McDade of South Charleston, WV. Mr. McDade fought with Deputy Meadows on the sidewalk on the ground as Deputy Meadows used a Taser to attempt to subdue him. Mr. McDade was eventually handcuffed by Deputy Meadows and the assisting Charleston Police Officers who arrived during the fight.
The white substance in the plastic baggie field tested positive as cocaine. Also found in the car were baggies of heroin and marijuana, and almost $3,000 cash. Field sobriety tests were administered, which Mr. McDade failed. He was offered a chemical breath test but he refused. He was charged with driving under the influence, possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, battery on a police officer, and obstructing an officer. He was taken to South Central Regional Jail to be held until arraignment later that morning.
Attached is a mug shot of Mr. McDade taken during his arrest. As is always the case in criminal matters, the charges against Mr. McDade are merely accusations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
