This morning around 8:00 a.m. Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office received word a stolen vehicle was near Keystone Drive, near Charleston, WV.  They went to the area and spotted the car, a tan Honda CRV.  The car was parked along a roadway with a male in the driver’s seat.  The driver was later identified as Richard Allen Short, 21 of Clendenin, WV.

Cpl. J. D. Yost and Detective W. S. Hunter moved in to detain the driver and investigate when the driver began moving the vehicle, nearly striking Detective Hunter’s vehicle and Cpl. Yost who was by then on foot near the car.

The two Deputies pursued the vehicle onto Greenbrier Street, through Rutledge Road, and onto Campbell’s Creek Drive.  Mr. Short fled through the school zone at Mary Ingles Elementary School where children were still arriving.  Mr. Short lost control of his vehicle near Fruitwood Lane, crashing into a residential yard.  He fled on foot a short distance into a wooded area but was taken into custody by Lieutenant J. S. Thaxton.

Mr. Short was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing in a vehicle.  As is always the case in criminal matters, the charges against Mr. Short are merely accusations.  He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
