On Thursday afternoon, at about 1:30 pm, a 1988 Dodge cargo van driven by Charles Walker age 72 of Charleston was traveling toward Charleston on US60 in Shrewsbury when his van drifted into the eastbound lane and struck a mini-van driven Deborah Hancock-Filbin age 35 of East Bank in a head-on style collision. Hancock-Filbin’s van was knocked over the embankment near the railroad tracks entrapping her due to the van’s front end damage. Fortunately she, Brittany Hancock age 14 and Hunter Clark age 07 months received relatively minor injuries, likely because all were properly restrained.
Charles Walker sustained serious injuries largely due to the damage and type of impact. It is undetermined at this point if he was wearing a seatbelt.
All occupants were transported to CAMC Divisions for evaluation and treatment.
The exact cause of the accident is unknown and It continues to be investigated by Deputy C.D. Lyons.
Traffic was blocked in both directions for over one hour while emergency crews worked to extricate the drivers and clear the road.
