On September 2, 2014, at 4:14 a.m., a crash was reported to Metro 911. The single-vehicle rollover occurred near the 112 mile marker of I-77 South, just before the Tupper’s Creek exit.
The vehicle, a Toyota FJ Cruiser, was traveling south on I-77. It departed the roadway to the left and traveled into the grassy median. The vehicle then rolled approximately six times before coming to a stop.
The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the back glass. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and sustained non-life threatening injuries, but is in critical condition. She was transported by ambulance to Charleston General Hospital. The involved driver and passenger were married.
Names will likely be released later in the day after uninvolved family members are notified of the death. The matter is still under investigation. The contributing factors and causes have not been completely established at this time. Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit members are leading the investigation.
I-77 was closed during the initial investigation and clean-up process. Southbound traffic was diverted onto Route 21 and back to I-77. The road reopened shortly before 8:00 a.m. The traffic detour was conducted by Kanawha County Deputy Sheriffs and West Virginia State Police Troopers.
