On November 5, 2014, at 5:28 a.m. a 911 call was received by Metro 911 from the 200 block of Campbell’s Creek Road. David Campbell said a man broke into his house, and he had shot that man. The intruder was later identified as Robert Andrew Carter, 31 years old of Campbell’s Creek, WV.
Mr. Campbell had been out of town and came home last night to find his house had been burglarized, items were taken and the electric meter was removed from his house. He did not have a phone to call 911, and decided to wait to report the crime until the following day. He heard some noises in the early morning hours and went outside to investigate. He saw someone across the road with a flashlight, but that person moved out of sight.
Mr. Campbell started toward the road to make sure the person had moved along. When he got to his driveway he saw his garage doors had been opened and could hear someone inside. Mr. Campbell went to the doorway and saw Mr. Carter. Mr. Campbell had a .25 caliber pistol with him.
During the confrontation Mr. Campbell fired a warning shot, and Mr. Carter charged toward him. Mr. Campbell shot Mr. Carter, who then shouted something like, “I’ll kill you, old man,” and continued toward Mr. Campbell. Mr. Campbell then fired another shot into Mr. Carter’s chest. Mr. Carter then collapsed at the doorway of the garage and died at the scene.
Mr. Carter’s height was 6’2”, and weighed approximately 230 pounds. Mr. Campbell is 65 years old, 5’9” tall, and weighs approximately 155 pounds.
There has been a rash of burglaries and property crimes in the Campbell’s Creek area in recent days. Mr. Carter was a suspect in some of those crimes.
The scene was processed for evidence and thoroughly documented. Neighbors were interviewed and Mr. Campbell is cooperating with the investigators. When the investigation is complete the body of work will be reviewed by the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
