On August 17, 2015 at 11:30 p.m. a crash was reported to Metro 911. A tractor-trailer crashed after reportedly hydroplaning on I-64 East near the 50 mile marker between Institute and Cross Lanes, WV. Deputy J. A. Smith of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to investigate.
The tractor spun 180 degrees, struck the guardrail, then rolled down an embankment onto its top. The driver, Kevin Wagy, 41 years old of Sunbury, OH, was initially trapped inside the vehicle. He was extricated and taken to Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Division for evaluation of possible injuries.
The truck was hauling an ammonia solution in cartons. The solution spilled during the crash. The WV Department of Environmental Protection responded to assist with clean-up. Two lanes of I-64 East were closed during that clean-up. No citations have been issued at this time. The causes of the crash are still under investigation.
