On June 20, 2013, Roy Rodger Pittman was released from hospital care. Immediately following his release he was arrested by detectives with the Kanawha Bureau of Investigation and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
On the evening of May 24, 2013 Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to residences on Keystone Drive just outside of the City of Charleston. They were dispatched there for a shooting. Pittman’s 15 year old adopted daughter was killed with a shotgun. Another of his children, an adopted son, was also shot. Pittman was confronted by deputies who watched Pittman shoot himself in the face with a shotgun. He was transported to the hospital for treatment while detectives processed the crime scene and interviewed witnesses.
When Pittman was arrested on June 20, 2013, he was charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, and malicious wounding. Each offense is a felony. Pittman was taken to Kanawha County Magistrate Court and arraigned by Magistrate Brent Hall. Pittman was then transported to South Central Regional Jail.
Detectives have not released theories on the motive(s) for the crime. The statuses of other family members, including the adopted son victim, are not being released.
As is always the case in criminal matters, the charges against Pittman are merely accusations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Attached is a copy of Pittman’s mug shot from his June 20 arrest.
