On September 19, 2016 Deputy N. L. Brill was dispatched to Dry Branch Road in Campbells Creek. Metro 911 received calls indicating William Curtis Atwell (42 years old of Campbells Creek) was at a house with a gun.
Mr. Atwell went to the house of his ex-girlfriend. Her mother’s fiancé confronted him and Mr. Atwell revealed a black pistol, removing the magazine at one point during their argument to demonstrate it was an actual pistol. Mr. Atwell pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire. Mr. Atwell left the area, returned on foot, then fled again attempting to fire the gun several more times. Evidence was located at the scene to support the assertion he attempted to fire the pistol unsuccessfully.
Deputy Brill obtained a warrant for Mr. Atwell for attempted murder and attempted wanton endangerment, both felonies. Anyone who spots him is asked to call 911. Anyone with information on where he may be found may dial 304-357-0169 or submit a tip on our website at www.kanawhasheriff.us. Email tips can also be received at Tips@kanawhasheriff.us.
Attached is a prior mugshot of Mr. Atwell. As is always the case in criminal matters, the charges against Mr. Atwell are merely accusations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
