Another scammer claiming to be a Deputy is calling people demanding payment by phone with prepaid cards. This iteration involves someone claiming to be Deputy Burns, and seems to predominantly be directed at doctors, three of whom have called or stopped by the Sheriff’s Office today. The suspects may be using professional directories to obtain names and numbers of their potential victims.
In most of these scams the fake Deputy tries to convince someone to give them money through pre-paid credit cards or gift cards. They may also instruct someone to meet them somewhere downtown.
If you have a warrant for your arrest, miss jury duty, or miss court we may tell you to go to the courthouse but not to pay us by phone. Do NOT give someone money by phone in these circumstances.
