At approximately 9:30 a.m. a crash occurred on Route 61 near Turnpike Ford, between Charleston and Marmet, WV.  Metro 911 received information indicating a maroon Pontiac G6 was going south on Route 61 and a gray Jeep Wrangler was going north on Route 61.  The two were involved in a head-on collision.

The impact forced the Jeep onto the retaining wall separating Route 61 from I-64/WV Turnpike.  The driver of the Jeep was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center, as was the passenger of the Pontiac.  The driver of the Pontiac was killed in the crash.

Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene the Pontiac crossed the center lane prior to the impact, causing the crash.  The driver was not wearing a seat belt.  The deceased is being transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy may be performed.

Names are being withheld while family members are notified of the event.

The incident is being investigated by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.

A motorcycle group from Georgia being led by Sheriff Mike Jolley (Harris County, GA) are touring the United States to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.  They will depart Baltimore, MD, Wednesday morning and arrive in Charleston midday.

When they arrive members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office will provide lunch for the riders.  We are seeking to help Sheriff Jolley raise awareness for the cause, and invite any journalists to come speak with them.  Sheriff Jolley will be available for interviews, and the motorcycles may make for some unique photo/video shots.  We will host the group at our headquarters facility at Virginia and Goshhorn Streets.  As they near our area I will release another email with an estimated time of arrival to help anyone planning to attend.

According to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ webpage, they have raised more than $4.7 billion since 1983, donating the money to 170 children’s hospitals for research, training, equipment, and otherwise uncompensated care costs.  West Virginia University Children’s Hospital in Morgantown is among those in the network.

On the morning of May 22, 2014 the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the WV Department of Corrections that a capias was issued in Monongalia County, WV, for Donald Lee Taylor.  Mr. Taylor was on parole for murder, but had removed his home confinement monitoring device from his leg.  The Department of Corrections had obtained information Mr. Taylor was staying with someone on New Hope Road in the Elkview area of Kanawha County.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office S.T.O.P. Team assisted Warrant Team members with the search.  After checking the New Hope Road address and following leads they located Mr. Taylor hiding beneath a mattress in a house on Walgrove Road.

May 26, 2014: Additional Information on I-77 Crash

Yesterday, May 25, 2014, at approximately 5:00 p.m. a crash occurred on I-77.  According to witnesses in uninvolved vehicles the crashed maroon Chevrolet Lumina (previously, and incorrectly, reported to Metro 911 by witnesses as a Buick sedan) went into the closed right lane.  The lane was closed for bridge construction of the interstate overpass over Surface Road near the 103 mile marker.

Sergeant D. J. Waller was on patrol on I-77 South when he saw a crowd of people standing near their vehicles near the crash scene.  He stopped to investigate and was the first emergency responder on scene.  He is also a member of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.  He was assisted by Deputy H. Shipman.

The vehicle went over a hillside where bridge construction is ongoing, landing on its top.  The Sissonville and Pinch Volunteer Fire Departments responded.  They stabilized the vehicle with cables to prevent it from sliding farther down the hill, then cut away parts of the vehicle so the driver could be removed from the wreckage.

The driver, Auvil Whited (97 years old of Nitro, WV), was transported by Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority medics to Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Division for treatment.  He was conscious and speaking upon arrival at the hospital yesterday evening.  His current condition is unknown.

The new bridge construction appeared to have sustained damage from the crash.  The vehicle was significantly damaged, too.  The driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

May 27, 2014: Telephone Scam in Kanawha County

$

Over the last few days citizens of Kanawha County have received phone calls from someone claiming to be a Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputy.  The caller tells those who answer they have missed jury duty and are now being assessed fines.  They instruct whoever answers to turn themselves in at court or pay a fine by adding money to prepaid cards or accounts.

A criminal investigation was launched immediately.  The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office never engages in online collection of fines for alleged court violations.  Additionally, no court fines are assessed until the accused has had a hearing regarding the matter.

If you receive a call similar to the one described above, please do not provide credit card, checking, or other banking information.  Do not purchase or add money to prepaid cards or accounts.

If you have already received such a call, and given money to the caller, please call 304-357-0556 to report the incident.  The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office’s detective bureau is investigating.

Also, the KCSO Deputy Sheriff’s Association occasionally raises money through phone solicitations.  However, the DSA is not engaging in such fund raising right now.  There are no legitimate calls being made asking for money by members of this agency.

In the last week Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies have seen an increase in the number of breaking and entering incidents.  These are occurring to houses and particularly vehicles.

A credit card was stolen from one of the vehicles and was used multiple times.  Attached are some images of the person seen using the card.  Deputy C. E. O’Neal is investigating.

The person using the card is wearing a camouflage jacket and a Transformers ball cap.  He appears to be a white male with black rim glasses.  He also appears to be wearing gray sweatpants, socks, and slippers.

Anyone who can help identify the person seen using the card in these images is asked to call 304-357-0169 or submit a tip on our website at www.kanawhasheriff.us.  Those providing information can remain anonymous.

Please take these recent incidents as a reminder to remove valuables from vehicles, whether it is locked or unlocked.  Most vehicles are broken into because valuables are visible through windows.  And vehicles with unlocked doors are often entered and scavenged because of the ease with which anyone can get inside.

On May 28, 2014, shortly after 2:00 p.m. a shooting occurred on River Haven Road, north of Clendenin, in Kanawha County, WV. Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office responded with medics from the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority.

June 3, 2014: Wanton Endangerment Arrest in Blue Creek

$
0
0

On June 3, 2014 Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a series of incidents on Blue Creek road culminating in an arrest of Brandon Weese for wanton endangerment.

The chain of events began earlier in the morning when Deputy W. S. Hunter responded to a child custody dispute on Blue Creek Road.  The Deputy told a family member a court order must be amended to resolve the custody dispute.  The order was amended later in the morning, and the mother was awarded custody.  When a Deputy Sheriff served that court order, the respondent, Brandon Tyler Weese (28 of Blue Creek, WV), was also served with a domestic violence protective order.

That separate order was obtained by his father.  They were told his father was also seeking a mental hygiene petition.  In addition to other reasons, Mr. Weese’s father sought the mental hygiene petition because his son had threatened to commit suicide-by-cop, wherein he would threaten with or use deadly force against law enforcement officers until they killed him.

The domestic violence order was brought by another Deputy to Corporal L. A. Grace.  Cpl. Grace served the protective order and allowed Mr. Weese to gather some belongings before he left.  Mr. Weese owned several firearms which he was not permitted to take with him.  He left on foot.

Cpl. Grace stayed at the residence until Mr. Weese had been out of sight for a while.  He then left.  A moment later Metro 911 received a call from Mr. Weese’s mother stating he had returned in violation of the protective order, and was outside the residence.

Cpl. Grace returned to the house.  He was initially told Mr. Weese was outside, but Cpl. Grace could not find him.  Cpl. Grace was unable to communicate with Metro 911 using his handheld radio.  He missed broadcasts from Metro 911 attempting to inform him Mr. Weese was inside the house and now armed with a rifle and pistol.

Cpl. Grace went to the front door of the residence.  The door opened and Mr. Weese was there with an AR-15 rifle slung across his shoulder.  He also had a .40 caliber pistol holstered and strapped to his leg.  Mr. Weese backed up and retreated to the kitchen.  Cpl. Grace chased him.  Mr. Weese turned in the kitchen and pointed the rifle at Cpl. Grace.  Cpl. Grace grabbed the rifle barrel and forced Mr. Weese against a wall.  Cpl. Grace used his Taser on Mr. Weese, disarmed him of the rifle, put Mr. Weese on the ground, and handcuffed him.

The rifle held by Mr. Weese was loaded with two 30-round magazines coupled to one another.  He also had a tactical vest with three additional magazines for the rifle and three magazines for his pistol.  His .40 caliber pistol was also loaded.  Mr. Weese also had on a backpack with ten more magazines for the rifle.  He also had one can of food.  He had also changed clothes into military camouflage fatigues before Corporal Grace returned.

Attached is a photo showing the items on Mr. Weese’ person at the time of his arrest.  Items were removed from his backpack and vest, and the weapons were unloaded when the photo was taken.  A mugshot taken during his arrest is also included.

Mr. Weese has been charged with wanton endangerment, a felony.  As is always the case in criminal matters, the charges against Mr. Weese are merely accusations.  He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

On June 3, 2014 a crash occurred at approximately 12:54 p.m. near Witcher Creek, Belle, WV on U.S. Route 60.  Metro 911 received an emergency call from Mary Ann Pritt (51 years old of Belle, WV).  The call was placed four minutes prior to the crash.  She said she was in a vehicle with her husband, Ronald Gene Pritt (46 of Belle, WV).  She said her husband was driving erratically and traveling about 100 mph.  She said he was not listening to her, and acted as though he could not hear her.  She said they had just left a Veteran’s Affairs clinic and was, “acting crazy,” according to the 911 call.

Officers with the Belle Police Department and Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office started toward the vehicle.  Near Witcher Creek Mr. Pritt lost control of his vehicle, a silver Chevrolet Impala, while he traveled east.  He struck another east-bound car in a rear-end collision.  That vehicle veered toward the west-bound traffic and side-swiped a west-bound car.  Mr. Pritt’s vehicle rolled onto railroad tracks.  A parked vehicle nearby was damaged by debris.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Pritt were transported to Charleston Area Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Another involved driver was also transported.  The third driver was examined at the scene by Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority personnel, but refused transport to a hospital.

Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstruction experts downloaded computer information from Mr. Pritt’s vehicle.  At ½ second prior to impact his vehicle’s speed was 86 mph.  The roadway was fully reopened at 4:15 p.m.
