The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office’s Day Report Division, commonly known as the Kanawha Day Report Center, will complete its tenth year of operation on Tuesday, June 30, 2015. The Kanawha Day Report Center opened on July 1, 2005, as a Drug Free alternative sentencing program to assist clients in making real progress in their lives and to assist clients in obtaining the needed skills to function properly in a main-stream society, while under close supervision.
Our Day Report Center is utilized by Kanawha County’s Circuit Court, Magistrate Court, Family Court, and the local State of WV Parole Office. Kanawha Day Report clients, once assessed, are placed in individualized programming which includes, but is not limited to the following classes: Substance Abuse Group Counseling; G.E.D.; Anger Management; Parenting; Cognitive Behavior; Preparing for the Work Force; Domestic Violence 101.
During its 10 years of operation the Kanawha Day Report Center has incorporated the Drug Court and Domestic Violence Court.
Three of the Kanawha Day Report Center’s original employees are still present: Chief Don Searls; Deputy Chief Mike Earnest; and Day Report Officer Nicole Campbell, who believe that the programming offered definitely assists the clients.
In the past 10 years the Kanawha Day Report Center has provided programming to 2,240 clients and saved in excess of $25,000,000 in Regional Jail Costs. Its currents recidivism rate among graduates is less than 13%.
Chief Searls and the staff thank the Kanawha County Commission, Judge Jennifer Bailey, Judge Louis “Duke” Bloom, Sheriff John Rutherford and former Sheriff Mike Rutherford for working to contain inflating costs to society and a desire to help offenders in their struggles by establishing the Kanawha Day Report Center.
